After the Capistrano Unified School District recall scandal, which drove imperial Superintendent Jim Fleming from his post after it was revealed that the district maintained an enemies' list of parents supporting the board recall, it will be interesting to see how the board elections go on Nov. 7. Here is a mailer from the reform slate.

The following is a Blogjack from Talega resident, parent, attorney and long-suffering NY Jets fan Mike Winsten:
I hope you don't mind me contacting you this way. I am writing because you live in the Capistrano Unified School District, and for the first time ever, I am reaching out to support candidates in a local race for public office.
As you may be aware, I'm proud to be at the forefront of the fight to reform the Capistrano Unified School District, for oh so many reasons. I am writing to request that you strongly consider voting for challengers Ellen Addonizio, Anna Bryson and Larry Christensen for the 3 CUSD Trustee seats up for re-election on November 6, 2006. An informative campaign flyer is attached.
In San Clemente, my neighborhood is lucky enough to have our very own Vista Del Mar Elementary and Middle Schools, yet in only their 3rd year of operation last year, they hauled in 4 refurbished portable classrooms, and several more are coming next month.
The current CUSD Board of Trustees fails at long range planning, and at every fiscal and planning activity they undertake. The test scores in CUSD are strong only because of the efforts of the onsite principals, the dedicated teachers and the hand on involvement of the parents, not because of this Board of Trustees, who are, for the most part, are uninvolved, uneducated, lacking in sophistication, and most disturbing, lacking in basic ethics and morals. They have been caught blatantly violating the laws requiring open board meetings. They are building a new high school in San Juan Capistrano at the outrageous price of $130 Million, and voted to bus the children of Talega - including my children - to this new high school when the La Pata Extension is based, even though it is going to be twice the distance as compared to the distance from Talega to San Clemente High School, and even though the La Pata Extension is going to be built right through the operating county garbage dump!
The District Attorney recently served search warrants based on information provided by my CUSD Recall Committee into the systemic misappropriation of funds and corrupt business practices that permeate the recent history of CUSD. We are anxiously awaiting the outcome of an ongoing Grand Jury investigation.
To put it bluntly, and not at all diplomatically, the CUSD Trustees have been repeatedly caught lying to their constituents, and they are undeserving of our trust. You can learn more at www.cusdrecall.com or at
http://www.ocregister.com/education/cusd_trouble_wide.php - the link to the Orange County Register's compilation of its investigative stories about CUSD.
There are 3 (out of 7) CUSD Board of Trustee seats up for re-election on November 6th. One incumbent is retiring after 18 years of screwing up CUSD and 2 other long time incumbents are running for reelection. They are undeserving of another day in office, and certainly not another 4 year term. Thankfully, we have a wonderful slate of three candidates running in this November's election.
“Reforming
CUSD: Easy as ABC”
Addonizio Bryson & Christensen
(The ABC Reform Slate)
Our candidates are endorsed by the Orange County
Republican Party, the local teachers union, and many
of our most influential elected officials. Ellen
Addonizio is a CPA. Larry Christensen has owned and
operated a civil engineering firm for 30 years. Anna
Bryson is a serial entrepreneur who is the former
treasurer of the California Republican Party, she
speaks 4 languages, and brings a wealth of experience
and influence to a tough job. Most importantly, they
are committed to restoring openness, accountability
and integrity to our school district. Please see the
attached flyer for a list of some of those key
endorsements and visit our website at
www.ReformCUSD.com
to learn more about these candidates and the very
important issues that require our intervention as
parents, taxpayers and voters.
If you want to meet these candidates to learn more
about why they are the best choice for our school
district, please let me know and I'll let you know
about upcoming "meet and greet" events.
Thanks,
Mike

Orange, CA. Ellen Addonizio, Anna Bryson and Larry Christensen, the three reform candidates running for the Capistrano Unified School District Board of Trustees as the “ABC Reform Slate” have each been officially endorsed by the Orange County Republican Party.
Addonizio, Bryson & Christensen are also endorsed by The CUSD Recall Committee.
• Tony Beall, Mayor Pro Tem Rancho Santa Margarita
• Gary Thompson, Councilmember Rancho Santa Margarita
• Neil Blais, Councilmember Rancho Santa Margarita
• Frank Ury, Mayor Pro Tem Mission Viejo
• John Paul Ledesma, Councilmember Mission Viejo
• Gail Reavis, Councilmember Mission Viejo
• Trish Kelley Councilmember Mission Viejo
• Carmen Vali-Cave, Mayor, Aliso Viejo

Candidate Larry Christensen, a resident of Coto de Caza, stated, “We will put the best interests of the children and the taxpayers above all other interests in each decision we make. We will ask tough questions, hold the CUSD administrative staff accountable for their actions, and work to create a transparent organization that is responsive to our community.”
Addonizio Bryson & Christensen will each bring a wide spectrum of impressive personal and professional talents that will make them uniquely qualified and ready to serve as CUSD Trustees once they are elected in November. They possess qualities and experience the existing CUSD Trustees clearly lack.
For example, Ellen Addonizio is a certified public accountant with investigative accounting and independent auditing experience. Anna Bryson is a successful corporate executive with experience managing multi-million dollar budgets and hundreds of people. Anna is also a California State Assembly 73rd District Woman of the Year – a community leader with a long and impressive record of public service and charitable works. Larry Christensen has successfully owned and operated a civil engineering firm for 33 years and has developed extensive experience and expertise in facilities planning, real estate development and California Environmental Quality Act experience.
Not surprisingly, the Republican Party refused to endorse any of the CUSD incumbents. CUSD Recall Committee Spokesperson Tom Russell stated, “The CUSD Trustees have been badly tarnished by our unprecedented recall campaign, the pending District Attorney investigation and the recent series of front-page scandals that have rocked the school district – they have become an embarrassment to the Republican Party and our entire community.”
The CUSD Recall Committee is the organization that led South Orange County residents in the unprecedented campaign to recall all seven elected Trustees of the Capistrano Unified School District. More than 177,000 signatures were obtained from South Orange County residents calling for the removal of all seven CUSD Trustees. The campaign focused on the serious financial mismanagement and corruption at CUSD.
San Juan Capistrano, CA. Ellen Addonizio, Anna Bryson and Larry Christensen have each filed with the Orange County Registrar to run for a position on the Capistrano Unified School District (“CUSD”) Board of Trustees in this November’s elections. The CUSD Recall Committee proudly endorses Addonizio Bryson & Christensen.

Addonizio Bryson & Christensen are absolutely committed to reforming and restoring honesty, integrity and accountability at the Capistrano Unified School District.
Three of the seven existing CUSD Trustee seats are up for election this November, including the 4th District where the incumbent, Trustee Kochendorfer recently announced she will not run for re-election. Incumbents are running for re-election in the 6th and 7th Districts.
Ellen Addonizio will challenge Trustee Henness for the 6th District seat.
Anna Bryson will run for the 4th District seat (being vacated by Trustee Kochendorfer).
Larry Christensen will challenge Trustee Casabianca for the 7th District seat.
Short biographies and a picture of each of the Trustee candidates comprising the “ABC Reform Slate” of Addonizio Bryson & Christensen are attached.

CUSD is one of the largest school districts in the State of California. Approximately 50,000 children are enrolled in CUSD public schools.

Orange, CA. The Endorsements Committee of the OC Republican Central Committee met tonight for the purpose of considering whether to recommend the endorsement of the three CUSD Trustees that must run for re-election in November (John Casabianca, Crystal Kochendorfer and Sheila Henness). Once again, the trustees were rejected.
John
Casabiance, Crystal Kochendorfer, Shelia
Henness
The Endorsements Committee voted unanimously not to recommend the early endorsement of John Casabianca, Crystal Kochendorfer and Sheila Henness.
CUSD Recall Committee spokesperson Thomas Russell was present and pleased by the decision of the Endorsements Committee. Russell stated, “The CUSD Trustees have been badly tarnished by our unprecedented recall campaign, the pending District Attorney investigation and the recent series of front-page scandals that have rocked the school district – they have become an embarrassment to the Republican Party and our entire community.”
On July 17, 2006, the entire Central Committee first considered endorsing the CUSD Trustees. The Republican Central Committee refused to provide an early endorsement to any of the three CUSD Trustees that evening, thereby forcing them to appear before the Endorsements Committee this evening.
The CUSD Trustees now face an uphill battle. They can still fight to obtain an endorsement from the Republican Central Committee at a subsequent meeting. However, to succeed they must obtain votes from at least two-thirds of the Central Committee membership…a highly unlikely prospect given the overwhelming opposition expressed at tonight’s meeting.

Irvine, CA. The Republican Central Committee met tonight for the purpose of providing early endorsements to sitting Republican incumbents across Orange County. Generally speaking, all Orange County Republican incumbents in good standing receive the political party’s endorsement in a single, routine, “consent calendar” vote. However, there was nothing routine about tonight’s vote as far as the three CUSD Trustee incumbents were concerned. The Republican Central Committee refused to provide an early endorsement to any of the three CUSD Trustees that must run for re-election in November (John Casabianca, Crystal Kochendorfer and Sheila Henness).
According to Neil Blais, 71st Assembly District Central Committee Member, “the fact that so many members of the Republican Central Committee were unwilling to provide an early endorsement to the three CUSD Trustees is indicative that Republicans are concerned with the leadership and administration of the school district.”
CUSD Recall Committee spokesperson Thomas Russell was present and pleased by the actions of the Central Committee. Russell stated, “The CUSD Trustees have been badly tarnished by our unprecedented recall campaign, the pending District Attorney investigation and the recent front-page ‘enemies list’ scandals – they have become an embarrassment to the entire community.”

San Juan Capistrano, CA. Ellen Addonizio, Jack Brick and Larry Christensen have each declared their intention to run for a position on the Capistrano Unified School District (“CUSD”) Board of Trustees in this November’s elections. Today, the CUSD Recall Committee officially endorsed Addonizio, Brick & Christensen.
After an exhaustive search for the very best candidates, the CUSD Recall Committee is confident that Addonizio, Brick & Christensen will put the best interests of the children and the taxpayers above all other interests in each decision they make. We are also confident these reform candidates will ask the tough questions, hold the CUSD administrative staff accountable for their actions, and work to create a transparent organization that is responsive to the community.
For example, Ellen Addonizio is a CPA with investigative accounting and independent auditing experience. Jack Brick is an aeronautics industry professional with administrative, budgeting and personnel experience involving multi-million dollar budgets and hundreds of professionals to manage, as well as a former harbor-master and police chief with extensive experience in campus security, and who has a teaching credential and a family with longstanding roots in public education. Now, the CUSD leaders are being investigated by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.
Thomas Russell, spokesperson for the CUSD Recall Committee, stated “The recall campaign uncovered compelling evidence of corruption at CUSD. As a result, many citizens called upon law enforcement authorities to commence a complete investigation. We believe those CUSD officials that misled our community and violated the law must be removed from office, held accountable and brought to justice.”
Like never before, taxpayers in South Orange County have come to realize just how serious the problems are at CUSD. By the thousands, voters are embracing the core message of the recall campaign -- the CUSD Trustees have squandered millions of taxpayer dollars and breached the public trust, and by so doing they have relegated the children into overcrowded and substandard conditions.
Now, local elected officials are also demanding answers and accountability from CUSD.
The Mission Viejo City Council recently ordered a complete audit of Mello-Roos taxes paid to CUSD by Mission Viejo residents. The City Council did so after learning that CUSD had diverted Mello-Roos tax dollars paid by Mission Viejo residents to pay for approximately two thirds of the luxurious new $52 million CUSD administration building in San Juan Capistrano.
The Rancho Santa Margarita City Council is also pursuing a similar audit of the Mello-Roos monies paid by RSM residents.
For years, CUSD leaders told parents and community leaders the cost of this extravagant office building would be paid with redevelopment funds from the City of San Juan Capistrano – funds CUSD claimed could not be used for badly needed school facilities.
The public has now learned this was not true. CUSD was actually paying most of the $52 million cost with Mello Roos dollars from areas such as Aliso Viejo, Talega, Rancho Santa Margarita and Mission Viejo – local tax dollars that should have been spent on schools in those particular areas.
Most recently, two scathing reports about CUSD school facilities have been released.
These eye-opening PTA Modernization Oversight Committee reports detail unsafe and unsanitary conditions at Newhart Middle School and Capistrano Valley High School. The reports demonstrate that serious health, safety and security issues have long been ignored by CUSD. (These reports are available online at www.cusdrecall.com).
Three existing CUSD Trustees must run for re-election this November.
With the announcement of three reform candidates for this November’s election, thanks to the incredible hard work, dedication and total commitment shown by hundreds of volunteers from all across South Orange County, the people will be one step closer to restoring honesty, integrity and accountability into our public school system.
